 Automobile Engineering ABS System

 What does ABS do?

When the wheel is about to lock, the system is detected and the pressure on the locking wheel is released momentarily.  The brakes are applied again as soon as the wheels are restored.

The revolving wheel hub is fitted with a toothed wheel (pole wheel).  A magnetic sensor, placed very close to the tooth on each wheel, produces an electric pulse when the wheel of the pole rotates.  Pulse generated rate (frequency) is a measure of wheel speed.  This signal is read by the Electronic Control Unit (ECU).  When the wheel is locked, the ECU modulator sends an electrical signal to the valve solenoid, which releases pressure from the brake chamber.  When the wheel is sufficiently restored, the brake pressure is again applied to the modulator valve by a switch off signal.

The modulator valve has an additional ‘hold’ position to maintain the pressure.  In the brakes in the chamber, thus optimizing the braking process.  The cycling of the modulator valve continues (5 to 6 times per second) until the vehicle has a controlled stop.

With ABS, the vehicle remains completely stationary even when the driver presses the brake pedal during braking, thus avoiding accidents.
